Pantheon's Stories
In the first age, Kaele'Thar filled the empty places of the world with life.
Where the Sparrow walked, grass rose beneath their feet.Where Life sang insects stirred in the earth. Kaele'Thar filled the rivers with fish, the forests with beasts, and the skies with creatures that learned to fly beside them.
Life delighted in every new thing. Then, one morning, Kaele'Thar found a bird lying beneath a tree.
The Sparrow called to it.
It did not answer.
Life warmed it beneath their wings.
It remained cold
Kaele'Thar carried the little creature to Noera.
"Why will it not wake?"
The Owl examined the bird and understood. "Because its life has ended."
The sparrow did not understand.
"I gave it life" "You did."
"Then where has it gone?"
Noera was silent for a long while. At last, Wisdom looked toward the distant horizon.
"That question belongs to Kerion."
So Kaele'Thar sought the Raven. They found him standing where the last light of the evening met the coming night. At Kerion's feet rested the little bird.
"Give it back" , said the Sparrow
"No", answered Death.
Life has never before heard that word spoken against them "I made it"
"And it has ended."
"Then I will make it begin again."
Kaele'Thar touched the bird. Its feathers warmed. Its heart beat once. Kerion touched it also. The heart stopped. Again Life reached for it. Again Death answered. The Sparrow grew furious.
Flowers erupted from the ground around their feet. Roots split the earth. Seeds burst open before their season
"You cannot take everything I make!"
"I did not take them" Kerion replied.
"You have taken this one"
"No, I have received it."
Kaele'Thar spread their wings. "Then receive nothing." And Life fled from Death.
The sparrow crossed the world scattering life wherever they went. Kaele'Thar made rabbits that multiplied faster than Kerion could count them. They filled trees with nests and nests with eggs. Fish spawned by thousands. Seeds rode every wind. Life would make so much that Death could never reach it all.
The Raven did not pursue them. Kerion simply waited.
The forests thickened until no light reached their floors. The rivers crowded with fish until the water could scarcely move. Young trees struggled beneath old trees that would not fall. Creatures multiplied until there was no earth upon which to stand.
Nothing made room for what came next.
At last, Kaele'Thar returned to the first tree. Kerion was still there. The little bird still rested at his feet. Life looked upon the crowded world behind them.
"I hate you," said the Sparrow.
"I know," said Death.
"Without you, none of them would leave me."
"No."
Kaele'Thar looked again upon the world. A seed had fallen beneath the first tree, but the ground beneath it was covered by ancient growth. There was nowhere for its roots to take hold.
Life understood
Slowly, the Sparrow lifted the little dead bird and placed it beneath the earth.Kerion did not stop them.
From the place where it was buried, a green shoot eventually appeared. Kaele'Thar stared at it.
"You said it had ended"
"It did"
"Then what is this?"
The Raven looked upon the new shoot. "Something else." Life considered this answer. Then Kaele'Thar took a seed from the plant and held it carefully beneath thier wing.
"Then I will always make something else." For the first time, Kerion inclined his head.
"And I will always make room."
From that day onward, Life and Death remained adversaries, but never enemies. Kaele'Thar fills every place that becomes empty. Kerion empties every place that has become too full.
And mortals say that when a sparrow lands upon a grave, the Raven does not chase it away.
Death knows that Life has come to defy him again. Life knows that Death has already made a place for what comes next.
